Pony Powered Bug Eye

30 years ago I built a 59 BugEye converted to Ford Power.
I replaced the complete drivetrain with Ford Pinto components.
Last year I updated it by replacing the 4spd with a Merkur 5 spd and added headers.
For more information, just ask.

That has got to be a blast to drive.
Several years ago, I found a Bugeye that had received a similar treatment: Pinto engine (over-bored I was told), and rear end. The bad thing was that it had too much power, if there is such a thing, and a previous owner slid it hard into a pole.
As I recall, it went to Louisiana.

I just noticed the pictures you added in the gallery. That car is fantastic! I especially like the style of the bump in the hood to clear the engine. It matches the rest of the car really well.

Matt,
Thanks.
Lots of fun work went in to this one over 30+ years.
Mine is Pinto all the way to the wheels. Cut 6" off each end of the axle to fit the bug.
The "Bump" in the hood is a plastic scoop for JC Whitney. A little bondo and walah, a custom hood.
The scoop was not for clearance as I have the engine as low as I could go and all clears.
The scoop was an attempt to get the heat out so the cockpit was liveable on HOT days.
Last year, the headers and cooling plentum were added in the same vain.
I cooled things down but still pretty warm.
Too Much Power........Plenty of power.
When built, I could smoke 327s and a few 396s.
Biggest problem was getting the power to the road.
Track bite didn't even help.
The blue one had to be built about the same time as mine.
Do you have any information on the builder?
I about fell out of my chair when I saw the pictures of the engine compartment.
The guy had the right idea but looks like his methods may have been a little crude.
Poor little bug.
